Everyone knows it’s been coming, but Samsung has now officially ripped away the velvet curtain surrounding its iPad rival, the 7-inch Android based Samsung Galaxy Tab.
Unveiled at IFA 2010, the tablet’s 7 inch screen boasts a WSVGA (1024×600) resolution TFT screen and a microSIM slot for connectivity.
Purring along on the Android 2.2 (Froyo) operating system, the tablet measures up as slightly smaller than the iPad at 19 x 120 x 12mm, and comes with 3G HSUPA connectivity plus 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.0 on board.
It’s only the beginning
Samsung is feeling mighty proud of its shiny new baby, insisting that the device “is pushing the market in new directions and Samsung believes this is only the beginning of its innovations as pioneers in smart media devices.”
“Samsung recognises the tremendous growth potential in this newly created market, and we believe that the Samsung Galaxy Tab brings a unique and open proposition to market,” air-punched mobile communications unit head honcho JK Shin.
Update: video preview:
Wow. This is very impressive indeed.
Video calls
Unlike the iPad, the Samsung Galaxy Tab comes with a front-facing camera for face-to-face video nattering over 3G, and there’s a rear-facing 3MP, flash-equipped camera for grabbing still images and video.
The Tab can also play back Full HD video and supports Flash too, which is a definite advantage over the iPad which will leave you looking at lots of blank, Flash-free spaces when surfing the web.
When’s it coming?
There’s been ne’er a whisper about an official UK release date or pricing, but Samsung say it will be heading our way “in the coming months”.
We’re liking the look of this fella, and if the pricing is keen enough, Samsung could be on to a winner.
