Buckling under Apple’s relentless puritanical mission to keep their products free of titillation, Playboy magazine has agreed to remove all saucy content from its iPad app.
Keepin’ it pure
With Steve “Mary Whitehouse” Jobs declaring to the world that his company has a “moral responsibility” to keep porn off their products, the adult magazine run by Hugh Hefner has decided to self-censor rather than face exclusion off the iPad.
Anyone shelling out £3.20 for the digital version of the magazine can expect a nipple-free zone to be maintained from cover to cover, with the Playmate of the Month feature now offering a tasteful headshot, rather than the traditional centrespread.
Sticky situation
Media commentators MinOnline, managed to grab a look at the forthcoming iPad version of Playboy, and noted that the digital version is missing many pictorials and – strangely enough – quite a few cartoons.
“Playboy’s situation is not to be envied in the App Store. Apple itself seems to be banning nudity, so the publisher has to come up with something that appears to deliverer value without delivering the ‘goods’ as many readers define it,” commentated MinOnline’s Steve Smith.
“The result is almost a full issue at a premium price. The problem for Playboy is that the missing pieces are so obvious because they are so well known.
