Asda Tech Trade In offers greenbacks for old gadgets

UK supermarket Asda has unveiled a new online service that lets their customers trade in their unused and unwanted gadgets and turn them into lovely, lovely lolly.

Promising more attractive trade-in rates than rivals like Envirofone, Mazuma, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Boots, Asda’s website accepts certain brands and models of digital cameras, handheld gaming devices, mobile phones, MP3 players and SatNav units.

Phil Stout, Asda’s Electronics Service Manager grabbed the mic and started spreading the love:

We reckon that the average UK home has hundreds of pounds worth of old gadgets that could be traded in for cash. There are more mobile phones in the UK than people, for example, so there is a lot of cash out there waiting to be released. Our tech trade-in service means customers can now save even more on their gadget purchases at Asda or use the bounty to save on the cost of day-to-day living.

We had a quick look around the scheme and noted that the camera trade-ins were rather limited, with Asda only interested in Canon, Nikon and Sony cameras – and selecting Nikon from their drop down list only offered one option, the Coolpix S620.

Trade in prices weren’t exactly over-generous either – a HTC Desire would only get you £144.01 while a 8GB iPhone 3GS would bring in £145.12, although Asda say they’ll match their rivals.

At the moment, users have to mail off their items, although Asda plan to roll out  the scheme in-store over the course of the year too.
