Canon has released its first IXUS style compact to offer manual controls, the upmarket IXUS 300HS, a pocket sized compact that also serves up slow-mo shooting.
The camera packs Canon’s new ‘HS’ system that promises superior low-light performance and high-speed photography thanks to a mix of a 10MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor and DIGIC 4 processor.

Offering an interesting-but-how-often-would-you-actually-use-it Super Slow Motion movie mode that records 340×240 movies at 240fps, there’s a more useful 720p HD movie capture feature, backed by a mini HDMI-out for showing off your snaps on the big screen.
The stabilised zoom lens isn’t as impressive as we’d like, starting at a moderately wide angle setting of 28mm and only going up to to 105mm (35mm equivalent), although it’s reasonably fast at f/2.0-5.3.
Film sensitivity soars up to ISO 3200 at full resolution, with a ISO 6400 mode offering even higher sensitivity, albeit at the expense of less megapixels.
As expected, there’s a full catalogue of scene modes, plus Canon’s Smart Auto, faux fish-eye, smile and wink shutter presets, as well as lots of lovely manual controls for the tweaking types.
Available in silver and black (with a white model exclusive to Jessops and a red model exclusive to John Lewis), the IXUS 300 HS should be out any time now, but at a price, with Canon slapping a £379 tag on the wee fella.
