As if living in Milton Keynes wasn’t bad enough, it turns out that it’s also got the slowest 3G broadband mobile speeds in the UK, according to a recent UK-wide survey.
Veh slow
The research by broadband comparison website Top10.com found that the average speed for mobile broadband connections in downtown Milton Keynes was a leisurely 1.73Mbps, miles behind Britain’s speediest 3G town Peterborough, which registered a nippy 3.86Mbps.
The Top10.com site analysed thousands of 3G speed tests carried out by users of its (iPhone-only) Streetstats 3G app to compile the list of Britain’s slowest 3G connections.
It’s grim oop north
Half of the ten slowest places were in the north of England, with Liverpool recording an average download speed of 2.21Mbps, Hull only mustering 2.35Mbps, while the UK’s second largest city Birmingham, found itself in tenth slowest place with an average download speed of 2.43Mbps.
Poor old Cardiff, home of the greatest football team on the planet, slumped into fourth place.
Alex Buttle, director of Top10 said: “There’s clearly a disparity when it comes to 3G connectivity across the UK. Despite efforts by the government and mobile operators to increase the speed of 3G services, there is evidently still a long way to go.”
Speed kings
After Billy Whizz Peterborough, the fastest locations in the UK were Carlisle (3.5Mbps), Eastbourne (3.47Mbps) and Stoke (3.35Mbps), with the likes of York, Dundee, Brighton, Derby and Reading all joining the Top Ten, registering speeds in excess over 3Mbps.
The UK’s slowest 3G cities:
1. Milton Keynes
2. Leicester
3. Huddersfield
4. Cardiff
5. Liverpool
6. Blackburn
7. Stevenage
8. Hull
9. Stafford
10. Birmingham
(London came in at 15th slowest)
