UK -based Storage Options have punted out a budget Android-powered tablet that lets users stream full HD 1080p content from the internet to an HDTV.
Priced at just £129.99, the Scroll Special Edition 8” Android Tablet runs on Android 2.3, comes with an 8″ 800 x 600 display and is powered by a 1GHz ARM11 processor.
There’s Wi-Fi 802.11b/g built-in, and the 8GB of onboard storage is supplemented by up to 32GB of extra memory via a micro SD card.
Bundled with the tablet is an accessory pack includes an HDMI cable for connection to an HDTV, an audio cable for connection to a home stereo system, a headphone splitter, pair of headphones, a stylus, a USB on the go cable to connect peripherals and a USB charging/ data transfer cable.
Mark McCarter, brand manager for Storage Options was ready to big up the experience:
With the previous success of our tablet range we wanted to enhance the user experience with a larger screen, but still at an affordable price as an entry-level tablet. We’ve also ensured it can become part of the home instantly with everything required in the box to connect it as a HDMI player to your television. The Scroll is built for everything from browsing and interacting on social networking sites, to checking a recipe in the kitchen.
Tablet snobbery
Although we’ve yet to try this tablet out for ourselves, we kind of know what to expect: a slightly sluggish response, a screen that is nowhere near as responsive as the iPad and an overall user experience that falls far short of Apple’s offering.
But you know what? Not everyone can afford an iPad and budget offerings like this can prove to be just fine for everyday tasks like web surfing, emailing and social networking – so if your budget is tight don’t be put off by snotty reviewers.
But be sure to do one thing before parting with your money – and that’s give the tablet a decent try out, because among the decent budget tablets there’s some real howlers.
