Texting trends: US teen girls type out 100 texts a day

We’re indebted to the folks at Mashable for putting together this fascinating infographic charting the rise of text messaging, and putting some figures on how SMS has impacted on peoples’ lives.

Text (SMS) messaging is now one of the most popular methods of communication in the world, driven by cheap mobile phones and the growth of “unlimited messaging” plans.

Such is the demand for text messaging that an estimated 5 trillion SMSs were sent last year, with 9.5 billion being sent in the UK alone last December.

It’s also become the favoured way for teenagers to exchange “whatevers,” proving more popular than face-to-face conversation and boring old e-mails.

Girls between the age of 14-17 years old are apparently blasting out a blistering 100 texts a day in the States, while less chatty boys in the same age group can only manage 30 texts a day.

Are you a big texter?

I think we’ve ever managed was about 60 in a single day, and that was on a drunken beano where we can’t even remember what half of the text messages were.

How about you? How many texts do you send out every day?
