Tech site Royal Pingdom found themselves mullin’ and a-musin’ over the question of how many visitors a website needs to secure it a place in the top 100 of the internet.
Using a list of the top 1,000 websites released by Google a while ago and doing a bit of head-scratching, they came with some numbers for the immense traffic you’re going to need to become the boss, head man, top dog, big cheese etc etc.
- To become a top 1,000 website you need at least 4.1 million unique visitors per month.
- To become a top 500 website you need at least 7.4 million unique visitors per month.
- To become a top 100 website you need at least 22 million unique visitors per month.
- To become a top 50 website you need at least 41 million unique visitors per month.
- To become a top 10 website you need at least 230 million uniquevisitors per month.
- To become the number 1 website you need more than 540 million visitors per month.
In case you’re wondering who’s sitting on the top spot, it’s Facebook.
Look at the tail on that
To back up their findings, Royal Pingdom have put together a graphic showing just what it takes to make it into the first 100, with a clear ‘tail’ appearing after the first big hitters.
The site notes that the top 10 websites get 42% of the visitors to the top 100, and 21% of the visitors to the top 1,000 and to secure a slot in the first ten, you’ll need a whopping 2.78bn visitors per month.
The tail gets even flatter in this graph for the top 1,000 sites:
